Higher base salaries for early career teachers

Teachers receive the largest bump on the salary schedule between years two and three: $5,000 for teachers who have been at Caliber that whole time. Teachers are also compensated both based on their years of experience as a teacher generally and on how long they’ve been at Caliber specifically.
Between years 1 and 2, teachers receive a nearly $8,000 increase, before earning an additional ~$5,000 a year between years 2 and 9. Teachers stop accruing salary increases purely for seniority after year 9, but the starting salary of $64,000 is well above the national average of $43,000.
In the district’s contract negotiation in 2023, all teachers received large increases to their salaries, but the largest increases went to teachers in their first three years. It’s worth noting, however, that despite this larger infusion into early career salaries, Oakland Unified still only provides teachers a 1% raise between years one and two, two and three, and three and four, which indicates there is still much room for improvement.

Starting salary for certified teachers with a Bachelor’s Degree is $101,947 per year. However, it’s worth noting that teachers cannot advance on the schedule without furthering their formal education, which does not align with the research on the correlation with increased effectiveness.
Starting salary for entry level teachers is $62,316, well above the national average of $43,000. It’s worth noting, however, that Green Dot’s salary schedule concentrates its raises in the later years of a teacher’s career, with teachers receiving a less than .5% raise between years 1 and 2 but a 5% raise between years 7 and 8. As such, this provision aligns with the recommendation for higher base salaries across the board, but not with the recommendation of concentrating raises early in a teacher’s career.
In 2021, Ravenswood gave across the board 10% raises to its teachers. The starting salary in the district is now $68,000, well above the national average of $43,000.
